Service and Outreach

Projects

2019-: Five Hundred Year Archive: Low-resource archive of heritage-related material associated with pre-colonial Southern Africa.

2014-: NDLTD ETD Search: scalable search engine to index and provide access to electronic theses from the Union Archive. This was substantially updated and rewritten personally in 2019.

2012-: NDLTD Union Archive: meta-archive of all thesis/dissertation metadata from around the world, harvested twice daily and disseminated to various service providers. Based on etdPortal software, which was substantially enhanced for the scale needed for this collection.

2007-: BOINC: local BOINC server for volunteer computing paradigm, in collaboration with Africa@Home and funded through CERN. This system was set up specifically to host African scientific projects in Africa. Christopher Parker did the initial software/hardware configuration.

2007-: Bleek and Lloyd Collection: collection of bushman drawings and notebooks curated by the Fine Arts Department. The digital library interface for this collection (developed as a research project) is maintained online in the CS department.

2007-2010: sivulile.org: collection of papers, presentations and training materials related to Open Access in Southern Africa, on behalf of the loosely-organised Sivulile collective. Christopher Parker populated the website with papers from various sources. Mushashu Lumpa moved the collection to within the DL website.

2006-: NDLTD Document Archive: collection of papers and presentations related to ETDs, especially including all documents from the International ETD Symposium series.

2006-: NETD: National ETD project in South Africa. Hussein Suleman and Jennifer de Beer conducted the initial feasibility study into setting up of a national ETD project in South Africa. The digital libraries laboratory then developed the etdPortal software specifically to create a national portal of all ETDs.

2004-: Lawspace: collection of theses and research papers produced in the Law Faculty at UCT. Software (DSpace) and hardware (hosted in library) were configured and are managed from CS. James Mutuku did the initial software/hardware configuration.

2004-: NDLTD: comprehensive source of information on Electronic Theses and Dissertations and the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations organisation. Nils Körber assisted with the 2008 version, while Kevin Feng, Henry Brown and Linda Eyambe assisted with the 2004 version.
