Roma Day 2

2004-06-28

on the second day i decided to do some serious sightseeing and even did the guided tour thing (though i dont remember details now)

some very large building showing different ages of architecture in layers

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

Temple of Saturn, one of the largest sets of columns still standing

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

Arch of Septimius Severus (at least thats what my guide book called it)

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

some kind of Basilica ... i know my guide said this was important or i wouldnt have taken a pic :)

[ filesize:960x1280 resolution: ]

Julius Caesar's temple - this is apparently where he was cremated

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

some tour guide pointing out the temple ... you can also read the plaque

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

the marketplace ... i think

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

House of the Vestal Virgins and their template ... make of that what you will :)

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

no idea what this is ... but the headless statues are cool

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

some dwellings on a hill

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

another temple ... i think this is the Temple of Romulus

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

a zoomed out view of the temple

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

sneaky peek at tourists taking pictures as an excuse to get into the shade :)

[ filesize:1138x725 resolution: ]

excavations still going on ... wow!

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

wait, hang on, maybe this is the Romulus Temple ... hmmm ...

[ filesize:960x1280 resolution: ]

and the guide kept pointing out the linterns still intact

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

some seriously large building still standing ... well part of it anyway

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

sculpture on the inside of an arch

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

and different stuff on the other side

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

even some travertine (i think) stuff done on the underside of the top part

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

the Arch of Titus ... yeah, thats what its called

[ filesize:960x1280 resolution: ]

as you approach the Colosseum, theres another arch with cool looking sculptures on top

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

a full-frontal of the Arch of Constantine

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

the Colosseum in all its glory

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

lots of centurions were hanging out outside trying to make a buck or two off tourists

[ filesize:960x1280 resolution: ]

inside the Colosseum you can see the floor which flooded for sea battles

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

and a bit of the original stands that remains

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

the thingies on the walls where the roof attached

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

sweeping view from as high up as i could get

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

view towards the Forum

[ filesize:1278x739 resolution: ]

a cross ... hmmm ... wonder when that got here

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

the entrance/exit, showing you just how high the ceiling is

[ filesize:960x1280 resolution: ]

and the cheesy shot to say i was there :)

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

back to Vittorio Emanuele II and his constantly burning flame ... why does everyone have to have one of these?

[ filesize:960x1280 resolution: ]

a wide angle on the sculptures

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

steps leading up to the man himself

[ filesize:958x1001 resolution: ]

a view over the city from the top ... if only i knew what i was looking at

[ filesize:1279x705 resolution: ]

well, hey, this looks like a dome ... maybe its the Vatican?

[ filesize:960x1280 resolution: ]

the rear of the horse :)

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

once again really really high ceilings ... built to impress i am sure

[ filesize:960x1280 resolution: ]

but the ceilings were still decorated and painted

[ filesize:960x1280 resolution: ]

some slightly dodgy looking bronze decor on the side walls

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

and naked men around the ceiling!

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

pictures depicting different trades ... i think this is education

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

yet another column somewhere in the city

[ filesize:960x1280 resolution: ]

the inside of the Pantheon looking straight up

[ filesize:800x600 resolution: ]

inside the Pantheon

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

and just outside the same building

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

the column had interesting hieroglyphic markings

[ filesize:960x1280 resolution: ]

the base of yet another column, but in Piazza Navona i think

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

the rest of the column showing similar markings to the previous one

[ filesize:960x1280 resolution: ]

an unnamed church casts its shadow across the piazza

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

and a random shop selling my once favourite toy - geomags!

[ filesize:960x1280 resolution: ]

the river Tiber running through the city

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]
