Roma Day 1

2004-06-27

i just arrived in Roma but wasted no time and went sightseeing as soon as i dropped my bags

one of many fountains creating an elaborate traffic circle and very european circular building in background

a closeup of the fountain

rooftops gardens as seen from the top of the Spanish Steps

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

the main fashion boutique road as seen from the Spanish Steps

[ filesize:960x1280 resolution: ]

sidewalk artists were all over the place doing pencil sketches of tourists

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

an obelisk at the top of the Spanish Steps - i learnt when i was in Ethiopia that all these obelisks were taken from Africa!

[ filesize:635x1252 resolution: ]

the winding steps going down to the road

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

tons and tons of people at the traditional meeting place that is the steps

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

looking up at the steps you can see the commercial influence - the big white sheet is a Loreal ad

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

the Trevi Fountain, where you are NOT supposed to throw in money for conservation reasons

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

the sculptures at the bottom of the building

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

people chilling out trying to get lucky

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

leaving Trevi, there is a typical narrow alley

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

an impressive approach to the Vittorio Emanuele II monument

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

a neat idea for renovations - use coverings that look like cartoon buildings

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

Vittorio Emanuele II the man himself, on horse

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

one of many really large sculptures integrated into the surroundings

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

pillars of what was once the Roman Forum

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

archways that still remain

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

are these gates or cages?

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

the fancy cornices that have fallen to the ground are still somewhat intact

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

a view of the Forum in the direction of the Colosseum

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

Palatine Hill, where the senators once lived

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

and even more ruins of the Forum

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

outside a lot of people (like me) sit in the shade and drink aqua to cool down

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

while others protest against something - couldnt figure out what - at the Colosseum

[ filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]

at the foot of the Colosseum ... notice the centurion (wannabe)
