This year I went to the annual European Digital Library conference in Norway ... was a rather small town with not too much to do but that meant lots of time for random chit-chat about researchy stuff ... which is why we were all there anyway :)
Saint Olof on a pedestal (and what a pedestal) in the middle of town ... in front of the shopping mall where i had to pay R100! for a watch battery cos mine died and expensive mcdonalds too!

the Nidaros Cathedral ... the most imposing and historic (and touristy) building in town
[
filesize:500x666 resolution: ]
a close-up of the area over the front entrance
[
filesize:600x800 resolution: ]
gargoyles along the side ... and lots of them ... not like those measly one or two you knew about at VT if you were really cool
[
filesize:1274x468 resolution: ]
and as you get closer one looks like a knight and another like a mummy?
[
filesize:752x546 resolution: ]
and then a normal person in contrast to an alien licking the head of an alien child clinging on ... or am i completely off-base here?
[
filesize:800x339 resolution: ]
the side view of the cathedral was even more impressive ... but then maybe this was because you could get far enough back to take pics :)
[
filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]
and here's a closeup of the bottom so you know how big this thing is
[
filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]
and closeups of the statues - one wonders who the beheaded dude is ...
[
filesize:1280x960 resolution: ]
and who's the dude with the basket of 3 heads? are these really christian symbols? what gives? (yes, i couldnt take pics inside - hence all the exterior shots)
[
filesize:800x600 resolution: ]
the view from the roof .. it was the highest spot in town and on the day i visited it was the last day we were allowed to go up the tower!
[
filesize:800x600 resolution: ]
the ocean and some kind of island ... hmmm ...
[
filesize:800x600 resolution: ]
whoa - big pic of gargoyle! up close and personal
[
filesize:800x600 resolution: ]
more gargoyles and other symbols on the top of the other tower
[
filesize:958x952 resolution: ]
real Norwegian graves ... looks suspiciously like graves anywhere else
[
filesize:800x600 resolution: ]
looking towards the hills ... and top left is the world's first bike lift that i only learnt about after coming back home :(
[
filesize:800x600 resolution: ]
norwegian architecture ... kinda squarish if you ask me
[
filesize:800x600 resolution: ]
the avenue from the cathedral to the train station ... quaint i guess
[
filesize:600x800 resolution: ]
Archbishop's Palace ... doesnt look very palacy but thats what they called it
[
filesize:800x600 resolution: ]
oooh ... real Norwegian chicks ... i bet they thought i was taking photos of the obelisk *evil grin* ... actually reminds me of Sarah (Wylie)
[
filesize:800x600 resolution: ]
lots of old stone buildings all over (recreations mostly), and dudes on bicycles all over the place
[
filesize:800x600 resolution: ]
on the pedestrian mall there were these kids selling textbooks on the ground ... very hippie-looking ... but they scooted before i came back with camera
[
filesize:800x600 resolution: ]
a troll ... i bought this guy's little brother as a fridge magnet from the salg (sale?) in the store behind
[
filesize:638x569 resolution: ]
more of the three heads ... methinks there be a pattern ... as was pointed out by Robert, who first noticed the repeating motif
[
filesize:640x480 resolution: ]
and more Norwegian university students to round off the day ... sommer chilling in the centre of town ... ahhh, the life!
