Joanne in Cape Town

2003-06-25

after about six months, i got my first visitor from abroad - Joanne from Edinburgh - one of the many campbellites i have known over the years. being my very first visitor, we did just about everything there is to do in CT!

some very strange/alien-looking (starship troopers?) incredibly large crabs

[ filesize:780x514 resolution: ]

a bunch of pretty big sharks safely within a tank at the aquarium

[ filesize:800x499 resolution: ]

feeding time for the penguins. the feeder is getting bitten while the ticker is making sure everypenguin gets some grub

[ filesize:800x600 resolution: ]

some eel-like thingy you probably dont want to meet in the ocean

[ filesize:800x538 resolution: ]

Joanne rather chuffed at seeing penguins, albeit in an aquarium

[ filesize:800x541 resolution: ]

the kelp forest ... nice eerie effect

[ filesize:800x600 resolution: ]

Joanne on the balcony of my flat ... notice the Observatory sign in the background

[ filesize:800x600 resolution: ]

sunset over the bay from the boat cruise

[ filesize:800x600 resolution: ]

table mountain from the same boat in the early evening

[ filesize:800x565 resolution: ]

the entrance to Van Riebeeck's castle ... well, more of a fort than a castle really

[ filesize:800x600 resolution: ]

the flags of South Africa over the centuries

[ filesize:800x486 resolution: ]

Joanne and an ancestor - the closest she got to a "real" African

[ filesize:600x662 resolution: ]

the governor's pool in the castle, complete with lifelike statue in the foreground

[ filesize:800x600 resolution: ]

quick history lesson, for those of you who dont know how the route to the East developed

[ filesize:600x800 resolution: ]

cell for prisoners/soldiers within the castle, which, btw, is a working military base these days

[ filesize:600x800 resolution: ]

the old dungeon, where the guide turned the light off to show up what it was like ... somewhat dark :)

[ filesize:800x600 resolution: ]

cannons pointing in the wrong direction - towards the governor's residence ... hmmm

[ filesize:800x600 resolution: ]

inside of St George's Cathedral ... Tutu's joint in the centre of town

[ filesize:800x600 resolution: ]

Joanne and me at my place ... staring at the camera waiting for the bloody timer to trigger and take the picture

[ filesize:800x600 resolution: ]

Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, with my finger next to a protea to prove "i was here"

[ filesize:800x600 resolution: ]

the rolling lawns where everyone had a picnic but us ... better planning next time, hussein

[ filesize:800x519 resolution: ]

a not-very-impressed English lass walking through the gardens

[ filesize:800x600 resolution: ]

penguins at Boulders Beach superimposed with the shadows of voyeuristic onlookers

[ filesize:800x600 resolution: ]

a quali'y photo from one of the more photogenic guys

[ filesize:800x600 resolution: ]

another "i was here" photo from the foreigh tourist :)

[ filesize:800x600 resolution: ]

more ancestors - or should that be cousins ? ... i was surprised to learn they dont have baboons in the UK (they have tossers, but no baboons)

[ filesize:800x560 resolution: ]

a very windy spot outside the old lighthouse at Cape Point, with both oceans visible in the background

[ filesize:800x600 resolution: ]

the new lighthouse, from as far as we could go towards the tip of the peninsula ... incidentally not the southernmost point - that was elsewhere

[ filesize:800x600 resolution: ]

looking north from Cape Point, with the Atlantic Ocean to the left and the Indian Ocean to the right

[ filesize:800x600 resolution: ]

Robert Sobukhwe House at Robben Island - Sobukhwe was a prominent Africanist leader

[ filesize:800x399 resolution: ]

the hussein at Robben Island, facing the mainland

[ filesize:800x415 resolution: ]

the prisoner bus we were on for the tour, with our tour guide (an ex-prisoner) at the door ... dodgy fella really, didnt say why he was a prisoner

[ filesize:800x600 resolution: ]

hole in the wall at the lime quarry ... not unlike lime quarries anywhere else i guess

[ filesize:800x600 resolution: ]

prison block where we got a short lecture by another ex-prisoner ... notice the very obviously American tourists

[ filesize:800x600 resolution: ]

a bullet/concrete/barbed wire thingum ... probably set up as a work of art of some sort

[ filesize:403x600 resolution: ]

tourists walking under the barbed wire ... deep stuff

[ filesize:800x600 resolution: ]

Joanne at Nelson Mandela's cell

[ filesize:800x600 resolution: ]

the Table Mountain Rotair - rotating cable car, where we saw a large group of Americans so thrilled to be in the "Motherland" ... oh boy

[ filesize:800x600 resolution: ]

and Bono (of U2) was there too !

[ filesize:800x600 resolution: ]

Joanne on top of the marntin (somewhere)

[ filesize:800x525 resolution: ]

Maclears Beacon, the highest point on Table Mountain ... for future reference: a very long walk from the cable car

[ filesize:800x600 resolution: ]

the Indian Ocean and some of the Cape Flats and other southern suburbs

[ filesize:800x600 resolution: ]

Table Bay and the city centre

[ filesize:800x600 resolution: ]

Dassies, strange rodent-like creatures we were told were the nearest relatives of the elephant (ya rite!)

[ filesize:800x600 resolution: ]

the mutha-f**kin gangsta ... Joanne after getting her hair braided at a local braiding salon

[ filesize:656x800 resolution: ]

and then simply chilling out on the last day before heading home
